Everything you could possibly want to know about the Salty Crew Reserve.
- What is Salty Crew Reserve?
Salty Crew Reserve is how we connect qualified marine crew with vessel owners or operators needing professional crew support for operational periods, fill-ins, short-term work or emergency cover.
- Who uses Salty Crew Reserve?
Two groups use the reserve:
- Crew – qualified mariners who want to available for work opportunities
- Clients – vessel owners and operators who need crew to cover gaps in their team
- What regions does Salty Crew Reserve cover?
We support placements throughout Australia and Internationally.
- Is Salty Crew Reserve a job board?
No. It’s a crew matching and reserve system, not a public job board. Crew are contacted directly when suitable opportunities arise.
- How do Crew join the Reserve?
Crew join by completing the Crew Sign-Up Form. You tell us your qualifications, experience, availability and roles you can fill.
- Do I need formal qualifications to join as Crew?
Yes, the roles require commercial marine qualifications.
- Does joining the Crew Reserve guarantee work?
No. Being in the reserve means you’re available to be matched with opportunities, but we do not guarantee assignments. Matches depend on client needs, timing, your qualifications and availability.
- How will Crew know when there’s work?
We contact you directly by email, phone or WhatsApp when a client needs crew that match your profile and availability.
- How will Crew be contacted if work becomes available?
You’ll be contacted directly using the details you provide in the form. You can also nominate your “preferred” method(s) of contact.
- What type of work might be offered?
The Crew Reserve serves all marine industries, and offered work is in-line with client needs.
- Can Crew update their details or availability later?
Yes. If your details change, just send us an email with your updated information, and we will update your profile.
- Is there a fee to join as Crew?
No. Crew can join the reserve for free.
- How do Clients request Crew?
Clients complete the client activation form outlining what they need: role, start date, duration, qualifications required, location and compensation.
- What information does a Client need to provide?
The activation form is detailed because it helps us match better and faster. You’ll be asked for information including the below.
- Crew role(s) required
- Qualifications required
- Dates and duration
- Location / operational area
- Compensation and conditions
- What type(s) of crew can Clients request?
Clients can request a wide range of crew roles including deck, engineering, master, yachting, pilotage, trades and scuba diving.
- Can Clients see Crew profiles before booking them?
Yes. Once we shortlist suitable crew for a request, clients can review qualifications and suitability before confirming any engagement.
- How quickly can Crew be sourced?
Timeframes vary depending on role complexity and crew availability. Common roles often require one to three days, while specialist roles or remote locations may take a little longer. Urgent requests are prioritised where possible.
- Who negotiates Crew compensation?
Compensation and terms are agreed between client and crew. Salty is not involved in this process. The activation form allows clients to specify what compensation is available.
- Are Crew vetted before being introduced?
Yes. We cross-check qualifications and experience, and speak with references before crew are put forward for consideration.
- Can Clients interview Crew before confirming them?
Yes. Clients are encouraged to communicate with proposed crew before finalising any arrangement.
- What happens after a Client submits a request?
We review the request and start matching it with available crew. We will contact clients if more detail is required, and present candidates as soon as possible.
- Do you handle contracts, payroll or insurance?
Salty Crew Reserve facilitates introductions. Engagement terms, payment and insurance are agreed between client and crew.
- Is there a fee to request Crew?
Of course. Clients requesting crew are provided with service terms after submission of their activation request. Fees are agreed before placement is finalised.
- What if a Client’s plans change?
For timing and duration changes, clients should check suitability with crew. For changes that affect crew choice (such as qualifications) contact Salty so that we can adjust the match process.
- Who do I contact if I have questions after submitting a form?
After joining or activating the Crew Reserve, you will be sent an email with a copy of your submission. You can reply directly to this email with any follow-up questions.
